Parenting kids on Myspace.com, the premier social networking site
See for yourself?
Create your own Myspace account using a bogus name.
Then start by searching Myspace by local schools in your area. More than likely, you will see plenty of kids from your area posting things that they never expected a parent to see.

So, you have a responsible teen and you would like for them to be able to keep their MySpace account or one of the other social networking sites. Alright, "TheParentsEdge", has put together a guide on how to let your kids enjoy MySpace safely and responsibly while avoiding most all "Myspace dangers". However, Internet safety will require parental supervision and for both parties to come to an agreement. Let's get started.
#1 Establish clear cut rules and guidelines about Myspace and Internet usage in general. Read and sign the parent\child internet browsing contract. or simply use it as a guide to help establish your own Myspace usage guide lines.
#2 Install software that will filter, monitor, block and log Myspace and Internet usage. The filtering is to stop the basic inappropriate images and sites, set time limits, and to verify, if necessary, where someone has been online, etc. The logging software or "key logger" will be used to track conversations online at whatever intervals you decide. With the key logger, nothing gets typed without your knowledge. With blocking, virtually all porn will be blocked, and other sites that you specify. You will have better control of who and what your child will be seeing online. These products are affordable, easy to install, and are setup to install and forget about them, except, of course, the logs.
#3 The single most important factor for your children to have a safe internet environment is parental involvement. I cannot say enough about how important this is. Even with all the tools listed here, if parents do not get involved then it's completely pointless. Parents, Internet safety depends on you. You will have to spend a little of your time each day to check out the site and review the logs. The intervals at which your check their internet usage is up to you. Logging onto their MySpace account and reviewing it will give you a good idea about how things are going. Also, the newer content filters will send you email daily so the logs can come right to you, automatically. I installed monitoring software years ago, it emails my logs to work and I hardly even fool with it at home.
*note: I am assuming you already have virus protection installed. If not, you need to add that to the list, even if you don't allow MySpace usage.
Search Myspace for profile matches be name or school.

MySpace is the most popular site for teenagers to hang out on the Internet. Kids use MySpace primarily to connect with other kids. They post information about themselves, place their picture on MySpace for others to see, invite other people to become their “friends” and spend a lot of time chatting with others and viewing the profiles of other users. Sometimes, they meet people in person through contacts they make in MySpace.

It's a strange thing, if your kids walked in the door with a new friend who was twice there age or who was rude and obnoxious
you would kick them out immediately. Why is it different online?
